This paper reports on the findings of a transnational project examining the role of national vocational and education training (VET) cultures in five European Union (EU)-member states with joint labour market policies - a Leonardo da Vinci project. The main participants were trainees, industrialists and trainers and the research design was based on a set of focus group interviews and a series of working conferences.

This paper reports on research designed to add to the understanding of work based learning (WBL) practices within higher education and draws on a case study of an undergraduate WBL program based in a United Kingdom (UK) university. By definition, WBL is used to mean learning through work and through active participation in the activities and purposes of the workplace. The research looks at key dimensions of WBL within the curriculum and at the significance of partnership and flexibility in establishing the need for WBL programs in higher education.

In this paper, Salling Olesen proposes that lifelong learning and collective experience form a meeting point of two quite different critical traditions and he questions whether they are alternative approaches or alternative theoretical bases for a similar educational discourse. For his first theme, he looks at the historical conditions for lifelong learning and how they affect people in their work. Then he identifies the different traditions and compares his own background in the German tradition of critical theory, specifically the work of Oskar Negt, with that of Michel Foucault and the post-modernist tradition.

Small enterprises are not large users of structured training, however they are often actively engaged in learning. In Australia, despite extensive changes in content, delivery and the range of providers, small businesses remain small users of the training provided through the formal system. Is there a framework that identifies the sorts of learning they engage in and can this be useful to guide government support? This paper proposes a possible model. [It] builds upon a number of earlier Australian studies in an attempt to provide a framework that might inform the relationship between education systems and small enterprises.

The authors have recently been involved in the practical training of police constables and law graduates in New South Wales (NSW) and they found that, although they approached both areas quite differently, similar issues were raised during implementation. Browne and Lamb are interested to explore learning outcomes in the workplace in terms of the differences between supervision and mentoring and they identified six questions which are the focus of their research.

This roundtable focuses on the lives and experiences of immigrant women in the context of casualisation of labour and job deskilling. Each author presents a study and they note the failure of many training programs to overcome the complex ways in which race and gender, the new economy, and other forms of exclusion discriminate against immigrant women. They argue that the planning and execution of training must be considered within the wider context of globalisation, economic restructuring and labour market flexibility.

This paper addresses the ‘theoretical neglect of educational research as contextualised practice’. The authors claim that scholarly texts on research in adult education are lacking in information as to how the research practice is shaped by its context of application. They assert that the practice of adult education stems from a wide range of traditions and its practice is consequently very diverse. It is therefore essential to develop an awareness of the relationship between researcher understandings and the situations, participants, processes and texts of research.

In this paper, Jones describes his development of a theoretical model for the assessment of student learning which is based on the nature of the evidence used to carry out the assessments. His concerns relate to the process of making judgements, not to the actual purpose of the assessment itself. Although he was originally concerned with the way teachers assess and evaluate creative art, he believes that the importance of the nature of evidence can be applied to any subject. How, in the absence of absolute values, can student work be assessed? The model he proposes identifies what learning has taken place and what evidence is acceptable as confirmation of that learning.

The authors of this paper contend that, despite the controversial nature of the learning organisation concept, few empirical studies have examined the relationship between the concept and improved results. The paper reports on an exploratory study on the relationship between concept and actual performance, using the Dimensions of the Learning Organization Questionnaire (DLOQ). The following questions were addressed: (1) what is the relationship between the seven dimensions of the DLOQ instrument and the perceptual organisational outcome variables as defined by financial and knowledge performance?; and (2) what is the relationship between the seven dimensions of the DLOQ instrument and objective organisational outcome variables as defined by four secondary measures of financial performance - return on equity (ROE), return on assets (ROA), Tobin's q, and market value-added (MVA)? The theoretical framework, research design and data analysis are provided. The authors conclude that there is evidence of a positive association between the adoption of these practices and improved performance. However, they recommend caution and the necessity for organisations to understand the complexities associated with becoming a learning organisation.
